Last week launched the first ever Austin Fashion Week. I was initially sceptical, considering that for such a charming, creative city, the definition of fashion here is open for interpretation, ranging from flops and kitsch t's to rehashed vintage rockabilly. Nonetheless, I figured any attempt at cultivating a serious fashion scene needs to be supported, especially with friends working events and nominated for awards.
By far, the highlight of the week's plethora of trunk shows was Corey Lynn Calter's pop-shop boutique. Her collections were a mix of retro and rocker, fresh and fun, with bright prints and great cuts. I was fascinated by the displays of her inspiration boards for each clothing pod. I talked with her for quite a while and found her to be just as worldly, entertaining and quirky as her clothing line would suggest. I think she's my new BFF, and her presence is the reason I see a glimmer of hope for fashion weeks to come.
